hi,

having carpets fitted soon in our house. just wondering if i should lay hardboard first. the floorboards are old but in reasonable condition and pretty flat. a few biggish gaps here and there (5mm). we are laying a reasonably good quality carpet with a good quality underlay. will boarding be necessary or is it always advisable? i dont want the boards to be visible through the carpet.

thanks,

chris

A decent carpet needs more than "pretty flat"
You really need to sand all bumps down and fit hardboard.
