running overflow

the tank that feeds the central heating has overflowed.the cold supply ball cock is not leaking.it is not dripping from the overflow but staining suggests water has gushed out.any ideas welcome.thanks

lower both the ballcocks a little;ie bend them down if metal or adgust them if they are plastic arms

WHERE IS THE WATER LEVEL RELATIVE TO THE OVERFLOW OUTLET?
BALLCOCK VALVE SHOULD BE SET UP TO CLOSE WITH WATER LEVEL 1"-2" BELOW OVERFLOW OUTLET TO COPE WITH ANY EXPANSION IN THE CENTRAL HEATING SYSTEM.

the water is up to overflow level.the ballcock is not leaking.i think the extra water is from the expansion pipe from central heating.the pump is working.the boiler is working.the system has worked fine for years until now.the water is black ,like when the radiators are bled.

SYSTEM IS OVER FILLED.
EMPTY A COUPLE OF BUCKETS OF WATER FROM TANK TO GET THE LEVEL TO BELOW THAT OF THE OVERFLOW OUTLET.
IF THE BALLCOCK VALVE OPENS TO REFILL, THEN YOU NEED TO ADJUST IT TO CLOSE TO MAINTAIN THE 1"-2" BELOW OVERFLOW LEVEL.
