Water system "noisy" at night ...

hi

I've just moved into a new house (built 1965).

A couple of years ago the owners got British Gas to install a new Potterton 30L-100L boiler in the attic.

I have noticed at night that there is a constant low-intensity sound coming from the attic, as though the heating is on - even though it isn't !

It's not an "abnormal" sound as such, just sounds as though the heating/water system is active.

My previous house had an old combi wall mounted boiler in the kitchen - I'm sure this only made a sound when it was actually fired up & heating.

Maybe it's because the tank / boiler are right above me now ?

Is this normal for a condenser boiler in the attic - or should I get it looked at (it had a BG inspection prior to house purchase only a few weeks ago, which it passed) ?

I kind of like complete silence at night !

Try turning spur switch off - does the noise stop ?

definately from the boiler ?

Could it be the frost stat bringing the heating on when the temperature drops - as it should through the night ?

will watch for further posts

Many thanks

I'm not actually sure whether it is the boiler, or water tank or combination of the 2.

There is no heating activity during the night (radiators cold).

I'm going to have to borrow a ladder to get up there and check exactly where it's coming from ....

Right I think I've found the source.

Not the boiler but a thing called Grundfos Super Selectric, which after googling appears to be a pump.

It is quite a quiet noise, but appears to get amplified through the loft floor / bedroom ceiling.

Also I noticed it is dripping slightly at the bottom.

So is this normal for a pump like this to make a constant low level activity noise ?

thanks

No, when the heating/hot water is off - the pump should also be off.

There's a wiring fault somewhere.
Is the water getting into the electrics ?

Not as far as I can see - it's a very slow drip underneath, which is falling onto some insulation foam underneath, leaving some limescale residue.

So I guess I should get this looked at ? ... :(
