changing from mechanical stat to programmable

Hi guys,
Now the question and indeed answer seems simple to me, but thought i'd check with you guys anyway....
My combi boiler has (what i'd call) and old-fashioned spinning wheel for the heating timer. A round dial marked with the 24 hours of the day, and tiny switches every 15 minutes you flick inwards to indicate ON and outwards for OFF.
Well, this wheel is playing up, sometimes only managing to spin round 7 or 8 hours in a day, sometimes it is 24 hours in a day. This means setting the heating to come on in the morning is a bit pot-luck!
Now, instead of getting it fixed, at a possible expense, can i replace the thermostat for a programmable one? Leaving the boiler on constant so it is controlled solely by the programmable thermostat...
Is this a feasable thing to do? The current mechanical thermostat is in the hall way so I assume there is physical wiring between the stat and boiler, so would this mean a wired programmable stat will be easy to swap in its place??
