Knocking Pipes and Hot water problems

by Dan Hobbs » Wed Oct 29, 2008 11:03 am

I have a Baxi combi boiler - I think it is about 5 years old. We recently bought the property.

When the heating comes on there is loud knocking and banging from the pipes in the bedroom - what can I do?

Also the hot water is really inconsistent. It goes from hot to cold - fluctuates all the time - anyone got any ideas what I can do?

I am no expert so please help!

Hot water problem could be a faulty sensor. Probably the cause and the cheapest thing to try first, other possible faults could be gas pressures incorrectly set or plate heat exchange needs replacing.

The pipes may just need clipping and lagging, movement in the pipes can sometimes sound quite loud especially if they're just loose with no supports or clips. Also widening the notches in the joists slightly so the pipes aren't rubbing against the wood may help.

Thanks for the advice. I am a complete novice. How would I check the sensor?
