Our plumber has removed the pipework to a back boiler on our open fire. When we have lit the fire steam and black smoke belched out. how can we get round this problem as cheaply and efficiently as possible. We now have a combi-boiler therefore we no longer have a hot water tank.

I strongly suggest you get the installer to examine the back boiler and give advice before using the fire again.

It could be as simple as collected water boiling off, and will quickly go away, but there is a risk of explosion if the boiler has been capped off or is unable to vent properly and the boiling water may cause some damage.
