I am considering upgrading my CH Boiler and because I don't have an outside wall [I have a Chimney Stack which British Gas say I can't have the new Condensing Boilers with a chimney Stack] Britisg Gas were also reluctant to take the Stack through the roof which did not impress me much.

So in view of this can your experts tell me if there is any technical reason against locating a boiler in the loft space. I have a large Loft area with standing height and a access ladder. If I could put the boiler in the loft it would cure all my problems,

Hi Bill,

I see no reason why you cant have a boiler in loft with a vertical flue thru the roof. However you must have other things in place - at least boarded up to the bolier(floor). A permanent light, handrailing and a proper loft ladder.

Thanks for your reply. The Loft is boarder over and there is a permanent light up there. I have the Standard pull down loft ladder. With modern technology I can have the boiler controls in a suiytable place on the landing if need be.

About ten years ago when I built my extension I put my boiler in the attic space. The only problem I had since then is when I used to use British Gas to service it. They were always moaning about it when they called.

The most difficult part of the installation was getting the gas supply up there but I was lucky as I had a generously sized internal pipe chase. I’m no gas fitter but recent conversions I have done have all had Transco (or whatever they are now called) insisting on the supply pipe coming up the outside of the building.

As Steve says all the other bits have to be done also but I’d also advise on good insulation of the pipework coming to and from the boiler – no sense in heating up the attic any more than required.

Not only can you put a boiler in the loft, you can also site a modern high efficiency boiler flue up a chimney.

We use a proprietary liner system with Vaillant, and Worcester Bosch have just brought out a chimney liner system for their new 30 and 40kwi floorstanding units.

Thank you all for the feedback. Regarding the Gas Pipe routing my gas supply comes into my house in the hall cupboard which is virtually in the centre of the house. So the only logical route for me is Straight up so I hope there will be no problem with that. I may have to ron a 28 mm from the boiler to the loft. But I'm still looking for alternatives.
