Our usual plumber has said that come October B-rated boilers will become unavailable and has suggested that we change our boiler (which still works, just, but is old) now rather than pay double later. Is he right?

Yes he's right about A rated boilers only from October 2010, but you wont pay double.

If your boiler is working then it's your choice whether to change it or not. If you look at prices now there's a only really a couple of hundred pound difference in the boiler prices.

Obviously an A rated boiler is better all round, better for the environment and it will save you money in the long-run.

Alot of people are struggling for work at the moment, so maybe your plumber friend is short of work too - trying to drum up some business.

i don't see how you will need to pay double, as boiler prices are unlikely to rise that much, particularly at a time like this. Many merchants do offer discounts if you buy the boiler and flue together for example, maybe he is suggesting these offers could end? i don't know
As for a new boiler, i would agree with htg eng, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. However it will very much depend on your circumstances, such as if you are planning an extension, a system upgrade or concerns about the availbility of spare parts. What boiler do you currently have and what boiler or system is he suggesting you should get?
If you not planning any changes, the boiler is reliable and parts are still available, them stick with it.
