Hi, my WSP Gold pump is on the way out after 19 years of service so I'm looking for a replacement. We've had the house from new and looking at the pump installation the WSP Gold pump has been installed upside down. On the label, the flow direction is anti-clockwise.

I was looking to replace the pump with a Wilo Smart A which has a flow direction of clockwise.

a) Does it matter which direction the flow direction goes?
b) Assuming that I fit the Wilo in the way it was intended (i.e. not upside down!), have I got this correct? There must be a reason for the installer to have fitted the original pump upside down!

The important feature on domestic pumps is direction of the water flow. Most pumps have an arrow embossed into the casting showing this. Have a look at your old pump and install the replacement with the arrow pointing in the same direction. Do not be concerned with the pump rotation, it will be configured to suit the flow direction indicated on the pump casing.

Hi DEEARR2, thanks for the hint. Sure enough I've found the arrow on both the new and old pumps. I had looked through the project pages and didn't see any reference to the casing arrow.

I just need to get on with the change over.

Any thoughts on whether WILO Smart A is better (more reliable) than the equivalent priced Grundfos - both around £70 from Screwfix? The Wilo is an A rated pump whereas the Grundfos is a B.
