We have a terraced house built around 1910. It has two chimneys in the living room, which used to be two rooms knocked through. These are two completely separate chimneys all the way up however when we light a fire in one, smoke is billowing out of the other!

The only thing we can think of is that the smoke is leaving the one chimney and being sucked down the other.

Can anyone tell me how to solve this, or even who you speak to about getting a chimney fault sorted nowadays

The only way that can happen - is if the inner wall has collapsed, blocking the chimney - the wall normally separates the 2 chimneys. Major work, involves breaking into chimney - normally in loft space first - to see if you can find collapse. Any bricklayer can do it - but a bricklayer with experience of working on chimneys would be preferred. DON'T use any fires - or appliances connected to chimney - until repaired.
