Joist cross bracing blocks kitchen extractor fan ducting

Hi,
I'm trying to install some 100mm flexible ducting for a kitchen extractor fan. I have an ideal route between a pair of joists to the eaves, the only problem is that the route is blocked by a pair of crossed bracing struts between the joists.
I can (just about) reach the bracing struts, and could cut them out (with difficulty). I know that the braces are there to stop the joists twisting or warping, but how important are they really? The house is probably 50 years old, so I guess it's had time to 'settle'.
If I can't remove the struts are there any other options?
thanks
