Advice about Rep[lacing Electronic Thermostat Connected to Valliant Ecotec Boiler

Hi there,
my home is currently fitted with an old-fashioned cheap Honeywell mechanical thermostat, connected to a Vaillant ecoTEC gas boiler, which is rather uncomfortable due to a large amount of hysteresis and probably not very energy efficient.
I am considering replacing it with an electronic one for better comfort and energy savings. Can somebody advise about a robust, good-quality, not-too-expensive model, with a number of programmable periods (e.g., day/night/weekends)? I thought about the fashionable Nest but I think it's not really worth the high price as the house is basically occupied all the time with young kids and a mostly stay-at-home wife.
Also is it easily installed or should I look for a professional?
Any advice/suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
