Location of Heat Mechanical Unit in Semi Detached Property

I live in fairly old house semi detached, and am baffled as to the whereabouts of the whole house, heat mechanical unit? Usually it is in the loft but it is so dark up there i can only see a cold water storage tank....? Looking at the upstairs bathroom I have an old wall mounted heater, which has a wall mounted wire leading up the loft... Now I may not have one at all, but can someone give me some hints as to where it might be? As I would like to get it inspected?
