Replacing a Drayton Wall Mounted Thermostat with an ESI Equivilant

Hi All,
My first post so please be gentle.
I have a drayton thermostat on the wall at home, and i think it is behaving erratically, so i decided to replace it. (IMAGE ON WALL)
I have bought an ESI thermostat (ES-RTE/VF (Volt free heating / cooling change over thermostat)
After opening the existing drayton thermostat i can see three wires
Blue wire linked to N
Red wire linked to L
Black wire linked to '3'
The fitting instruction for the ESI thermostat state to link the wires as follows:
N (I assume Blue wire as before?)
L 230V AC 50Hz fused 3A (I assume Red wire as before?)
1 - COM
2 - heating satisfied or call for cooling
3 - Call for heat. (I assume Black wire as before?).
However, the new thermostat already has a brown wire connecting L & 1.
My query relates to this additional wire already connecting L &1.
This wasn't present before, and i am not sure why?
Am I right in thinking this is a straight swap, or do I need to do something else?
There is an alternative thermostat ES-RTE which only has wiring for N, L & call for heat 3. Should i have bought this one instead to do a straight swap?
Thanks for any help offered
Paul
