Creda Comfortaire Hot Air Heater

Hi all, I'm just buying an ex-council flat that has hot-air heating via a Creda Comfortaire electric heater. It's not working so I'd like to remove it.
However, it is housed in a cupboard where the door appears to be lined with asbestos. This can easily be removed and safely disposed of, but a friend mentioned that the heater itself may have asbestos inside. Does anyone know whether this is true, and if so, what type of asbestos (so I can get it safely removed).
Many, many thanks in anticipation.

You have to get an asbestos specialist in to check and test, expensive but it's the only way.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I was hoping that someone out there may have experience of this type of heater and save me the expense of having the tests - these run into hundreds of pounds round here...!!
Can anyone help please?

Ok, have you tried contacting Creda as they are still a going concern and may be able to give advice.

I have tried but no success so far... But I agree this is the best route so will try and try again until I get a response!
Thanks for your help but if anyone else out there has come across this heating unit I would be pleased for any info..
All the best

Hi Mikey,

Have you disposed of your Comfortaire yet? Did it have any more asbestos within it. How much did it cost to dispose of? I only ask because I am now in exactly the same position to yourself. Just bought a house with this system and am thinking of disposing of it. Alternative is to adapt it by replacing the electric element with a heating loop from a planned wood stove powered thermal store -thus minimising electric bills yet heat the entire house.

Anyway let me know how your Creda Comfortaire story panned out if you would. Many thanks.

Regards,
Harry.

Hi Harry & Mikey,
I just found my self in the exact same situation, as you both.
Any information would be beneficial at this point!

We just bought a flat in a building from the 1960s, and just finished the asbestos survey, which found asbestos on floors and ceiling in the entire flat as well of course on the doors of the build-in creda comfortaire warm air & water heating system.

The flat is small - 45 square meters, and we are now considering the removal of the creda system, it has air vents on the ceiling that are sticking out creating an uneven surface.

My question is - if you met with the same issue, have you removed the creda system together with the air vents (that waste so much space)?
How much did it cost?

We are 1st time buyers, and every step of the way more issues are popping out!

Kind regards,
Kat

Hi Kat,

Not got rid of mine yet. My grand ambitions came to naught as my main employment contract came to an end and I'm bouncing from one one (very rare) temp contract to another with v little spare money. Find Comfortaire system horrendously expensive with the ever-spiraling elec costs, so tend to leave it off as late as I can into the cold seasons. When I fire it up I do so without the fan running to act as a thermal mass in the centre of my house, with my wood-burner fired up in the evening to make it tolerable. My vents are floor mounted; ceiling-mounted seems weird as you would imagine all the heat would just pool up at the top of the room. My home report said that I have asbestos lining the door of the cupboard that the heater is in; it did not report asbestos elsewhere. The previous owner had just painted the asbestos board and I have found this is recommended to "seal-in" any harmful particles. Best of luck with yours and let us know of any outcome. Cheers, Harry.
