i have an old tarmac patio about 50m2. is it possible to tile on top of the tarmac. ideally without having to concrete over it.

Presuming you mean paving slabs Mo, yes its usually ok. The slabs should be laid on a bed of sharp sand and cement approx 50mm thick and mixed at 8 to 1. The mix should be damp but not wet which will allow it to dry fairly flxibly and take up any movement in the driveway below caused by varying temperatures,
