Increasing driveway area (whats scalping stone?)

Hi,
Hope some one can help me out here, we have a drive and footpath of loose stone. I'm going to increase the area by removing half of the large flower bed and a proportion of the lawn. I've already dug up the flower bed, and will be digging up the lawn soon. I've been told by a few I don't need to put any hardcore down just a sheet and some stones. I've already been parking on where the flower bed was and there's no movement.
I have read the project on this site and found it very interesting
https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/Drive.htm
It sounds straight forward to me.
My real question is what is "SCALPING STONE" which is what this project mentions, is there any other stone that I can use? I'm finding it difficult to source!
Thanks
Rossi
