We have a piece of slate (5' x 4' x 4'') on top of our [b]water well [/b]which has unfortunately broken into three pieces. I intend to rebuild the top part of the well surround (sandstone) to reseat this slate. I have removed the slate pieces and want to know what type of morter would be best to use on sandstone blocks [I will be increasing the above ground part of the well from ~6'' to 18''].
Also would it be possible to repair the piece of slate. I was thinking of drilling holes and using stainless pins with a suitable epoxy??

The slate can be repaired as you suggest but whatever pins you use for dowels make sure they do not rust as this will blow the slate apart. The mortar for sandstone is no different to any other but to get a decent match please see our project on matching sand and cement. We suggest using some lime, or even white cement, in the mix to get a lighter colour if you need one.
