How to Cover Poorly Laid Tarmac That's Breaking Away

Hi All
I recently had an area at the side of my house tarmaced, but the guy who did it has laid it quite thin and its already breaking away in parts. I also noticed lots of tarmac marks on the adjacent driveway which i believe came from when it was hot last week and i was walking on the tarmac on to the drive and perhaps the heat has melted the tarmac and my boots transferred it to the driveway.
I'm not happy with the tarmacing so i'm wondering what options i have to lay something over the tarmac? I considered some thin rubber sheeting, but i was unsure how to fit that? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
