Bitumen Vs SBR Slurry.

Hello all,
Now I hope someone can help. We recently moving into an old house build around 1720. In which we've got a basement kitchen and off of our kitchen we have a pavement vault. Now in the pavement vault the previous owners used a bitumen paint to seal some penetrating damp, this not only looks horrible and dark but in places its peeled away to exposed damp brick work.
What options are available to us? We've considered a Membrane Kit and sump but feel its excessive for such a small room as the water that does penetrate would only fill a shot glass and that’s usually dried up by morning.
Would I be able to paint a waterproof SBR slurry over the bitumen or would that need to be removed first(a very messy job).
I hope to hear from someone soon as this is the first of many teething problems with our new old house.
Thanks Jaime
