Damp in kitchen-external wall against next doors garden

When we bought our house we were advised by the surveyor that there was damp in the kitchen. The surveyor said it wasn't serious but said he wasn't an expert so we needed to get quotes for the work. Apparrently it was just against an external wall that joins to nexts doors garden(their house is raised with their garden coming 1/4 way up our house). However when we got quotes we were left further confused with a couple wanting to damp proof the whole kitchen whilst others were wanting to do just one wall.
We've now ripped out the kitchen and found black mould in the corner where one of the units has been. We don't have any other patches across this wall and have a large radiator on it. We have the window open all day everyday. Is this damp or condensation? Can we paint over it with anti mould paint or are we just masking a problem and making things worse in the long term?
Any advice is gratefull received.
