rising damp in old house

by jmick » Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:11 am

Our house is over 2 hundred years old ond mainly built from river rubble which is rendered from 6 inches from ground. There is no dpc. WE have just noticed a tidemark of damp above the skirting on some of the older external walls. This is the first incident of damp in our 6 year occupation. The summer here in N. Cumbria has been wet even for the far NW. Do we need to worry about this damp or is it likely to be temporary and be controlled by the house breathing and the the weather eventually drying. (we hope!!)

you have been lucky with the damp .
I think the house being built on a well drained surface and built with lime mortar has served you well, but with excess rain and winter comming I think the problems will only worsen.
Buy or rent a dehumidifyer this will dry out a lot of moisture but wont solve it long term.
Hope this helps

See all of the damp projects in the projects section. Most answers are in there and you can get free telephone advice.
