rising damp in old house

Our house is over 2 hundred years old ond mainly built from river rubble which is rendered from 6 inches from ground. There is no dpc. WE have just noticed a tidemark of damp above the skirting on some of the older external walls. This is the first incident of damp in our 6 year occupation. The summer here in N. Cumbria has been wet even for the far NW. Do we need to worry about this damp or is it likely to be temporary and be controlled by the house breathing and the the weather eventually drying. (we hope!!)
