damp course and external rendering

I recently had a new damp course injection in my mid victorian end of terrace house. The external walls were rendered to ground level when the previous owner had a damp course injected 25 years ago. The new contracter advised me to remove the bottom section of the rendering as it could compromise the new damp course. Having followed his advice I find that the brick work is unsightly and in very poor condition. Should I apply a new cement based reder coat or is there a better coating material which is likely to be less problematic?
