Water flowing into Cellar

Hi

we have a small, ex coal chute, cellar in our victorian property and for the first two years it has been bone dry.

recently it sprung a leak in a side wall that is getting progressivly worst - about 12 litres a day coming in at the moment.

At this point I am not worried about that itself - just the smell is terrible. Everyone who has come round so far says it is "probably not sewage". Is there any form of test I can myself to prove it is clean, sewage, dirty etc.......

Thanks for any help from anyone!

bluejools,
Suggest you do some detective work. Does a foul drain run along the other side of the side wall - you will need to look for inspection chambers outside to the front and rear. If there is such a drain get it pressure tested - this will give you a fair idea whether there is a foul water leak.
