External Tanking

I have bought a bitumen based compound from screwfix (AQUAPRUFE).
I intend to use this to tank externally below ground along my garage wall.
My neighbous driveway goes along adjacent to the garage and is higher than my garage floor.
This results in seepage through the brickwork onto the garage floor during rain.
The manufacturer instructions only call for sharp sand to be used as a protection on the last coat prior to back filling.
I am led to belive that a protection board will be required prior to back filling.
Can anyone advise on best protection for the bitumen coating prior to backfilling and where this can be pruchased.
NOTE :
My neighbours drive is approx 2 brick courses higher than my garage floor.
The garage wall DPM is just above the level of my neighbours drive.
