Verical damp proofing

Hi everyone,
I am about to undertake a damp proofing job for a friend, i am more than competent with the horizontal damp proofing system and how to install but have been advised i need vertical damp proofing in certain areas, can anyone advise on the best option for this.
I have looked at plastic sheeting but feel the cavity will still be bridged. Do i need to cut into the wall and insert a standard dpc?
Any advice would be appreciated.
