Hi, I think I know the cause of the problem, in as much as out guttering is leaking, which has now caused a damp patch to appear in the wall in our kitchen and a large blown area near the skirting board in the living room. I think the leaking guttering is the cause. Two questions, if I get the guttering repaired, what is the best way of treating the two damp patches, and secondly, how can I tell that I have remedied the root cause of the problem?

The fireplace is covered by a mirror, but there is a small gap a the bottom, which should give some air flow - could that also be a contributing factor?
