I have an old cottage with stone walls about 500mm thick(20ins), no DPC of course. There is some rising damp on the north face of the house.
What is the best method of damp proofing?

Too many variables to say. Rising damp is actually quite rare. What is more common is drainage leaks, gutter leaks, high external ground level, patios falling the wrong way etc. Take a look at the projects on the website called damp or mould, Diy damp proof courses, waterproofing external masonry. Once you have a full idea of the cause its easier to work out the way to rectify.
