we had fitted wardrobes put in 5 years ago on an external wall and in the past 12 months have noticed a musty smell and mould on some clothes. The wardrobes were taken out yesterday and the area just undertaken a first clean with proprietary cleaner ( Flash) the walls are still slightly mottled although not as bad as we dreaded. The question is what else do we need to treat them with? The damp appears to be surface with the plaster slightly mottled but improving already in just 4 hours, we could of course replaster/skim but not sure if this is necessary any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

You could paint a PVA solution on the wall to seal it.

is the external wall exposed to wind driven rain?? if so it sounds like you are suffering from penetrating damp. Do you have a cavity in the wall and has it been insulated. the internal air flow of the house will allow the surface of the plaster to appear dry but your problem lies deeper.
