Lack of Chimney Breast Ventilation Causing Mouldy Smell?

Our fireplace was blocked off with plasterboard about three years ago. I noticed that next door has done the same. They have had a ventilation grill put in at the bottom whereas ours hasn't. We have a funny mouldy smell in the living room. Could the lack of chimney ventilation be the cause?
Thanks
Brian

Could be. I had this in an old house & noticed a damp patch halfway up the chimney. We ended up opening the fireplace only to find loads of bird's nest twigs & moss halfway up where the chimney doglegs. So have a look for any damp patches 1st.,

Thanks for that, no damp patches on chimney breast but definitely a funny smell from somewhere.
