Tanking the Cellar Walls and Floor for Dry Storage Space

We’ve recently decided to tank the cellar and convert it into a dry storage space that’s not too cold.
The floor is bricked and the walls are currently painted. I’ve been running a space heater and a dehumidifier for a few weeks now. The place is drying up slowly.

However, the next challenge is to tank the walls and the floor. I’ve decided to use tanking slurry instead of a membrane because there’s no place to install a sump and pump. My main concern now is the mortar between the bricks seem to be lime based and it’s deteriorated quite badly. The bricks on one wall are also very damaged and has a powdery surface.

Can someone please advise me on whether I need to replace the bricks and mortar before applying the tanking slurry. I was thinking of applying a layer of sbr before applying the tanking slurry on the walls and then the floor.

I’ve attacked some pictures. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi

All holes of any kind in walls need to be 100% filled with a 4 / 1 sand cement mix before the slurry is put on.

More information on tanking can be found in our project here: https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/tanking.htm and also in this project: https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/u ... oofing.htm

We also have a video on youtube that you might also find useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdAqnJDRjHM

Hope this helps

The floor is very uneven. Is it best to apply a self levelling concrete then tanking slurry or the other way round.

Hi

Yes, level the floor first and then once all cured, crack on with the tanking.

We also have a project page on levelling floors here that may help: https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/l ... floors.htm
