Can anyone tell me what this series of holes are please?

Hi everyone

I'm new here. I've just moved into a house which has a cellar.

The walls have a series of holes drilled into them. The wooden beams above my head have plastic pin things inserted into the wood. It looks like something should be connected to it and injected into the timber. If so, what, and how often?

Can anyone tell me what they are for please?

Many thanks

Hi kevin808,
The holes along the base of the wall are where silicone liquid chemical has been injected under pressure to form a damp proof course.
The plugs in the timber are fitted to allow preservative chemical to be injected under pressure. This is intended to force the liquid into the tunnels of wood boring insects.

Hey Stoneyboy

Thank you for your reply.

Would this mean that the beams have already been treated for woodworm?

If so, do I need to have the beams re-injected at some point? As I believe this work was carried out many years ago.
Should it be something I should be alarmed about?

Many thanks!

Hi kevin808,
The grommets are a good indication that injection has taken place to eradicate worms and beetles.
You need to establish whether there is still activity, take a large piece of white card, hold it under the beam and tap the beam with a hammer. If you get lots of fine sawdust you should get the beam looked at by a specialist. You could also set up some sticky fly papers along the beam and see what they catch.
