Checking damp level in wall prior to repair

After noticing some dampness, discolouration and deterioration on the wall around the chimney breast I had a handyman take a look. He found a few problem areas with the chimney stack that he repaired and then finished by coating the entire thing with water seal.

Assuming all is now good externally, how might I go about determining the damp level in the wall before doing any internal repairs? I have a dehumidifier running in the the room at present and hope to be able to box out the wall around the chimney breast once it's dry enough to do so as there doesn't appear to be any insulation between the chimney breast and my internal wall.

Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi optimusrhyme,
Buy a damp meter and take readings over the next couple of months to check progress. If you have just had the remedial done it will be some time - months rather than weeks - before the damp dries out.
