Drain in middle of basement floor.

Hi,
I have an old victorian house with a Basement. I'm probably going to use a membrane to seal the walls (although I haven't decided whether to use batons or not yet)
The problem is that I have a drain in the middle of the concrete floor. Once in the 6 years I've been here some water has come up through the drain but apart from that nothing.
What can I do about sealing the floor? Can I block off the drain? If so what would I then do? Put down some scree to level it?
Thanks for any help / suggestions.
