Painting Kitchen Units / Cupboards

I have recently painted all my kitchen cupboards in a white satin finish, added new handles, etc...looks fantastic.
Just wanted some advice on what to do next, do i need to varnish it all now? These units will be knocked about and i'm worried the paint will seriosuly start to chip in the coming weeks!!!
If so, what type of clear varnish should i get?
