NEW PLASTER....HAS PAINTER DONE IT RITE?

I had all the house walls skimmed and as i was in no rush to move in yet,i let the plaster dry naturally with no heat at all and after 3 months i decided to have it painted.
I did the bedrooms myself and diluted the white matt paint with water and applied 2 coats and is now ready to be painted in pink (for the daughter)
Now from what i read and found out about painting on newley plastered wall i did as i mentioned above.
The big question is i decided to call in painters and decorators to do the downstairs proffesionally, they did it a different way and im not sure if they didi it right.
Instead of putting on a undercoat prior to painting the hall/stairs landing they mixed the magnolia paint with PVA and painted ,the finish is excellent but is that ok or have they done it wrong? should they have put on a undercoat like i did upstaires?
