I have just had my hallway plastered and I'm now starting on the paint work, i.e. stair banister and skirting boards however this is a 1930's house that has been painted and varnished a lot!!!

I have tried non toxic paint remover and burning the paint off however it just makes the area become very sticky!!!

Is there any other way of improving the skirting boards without striping them down to the wood or replacing them?

I dont think there is, however thought I would ask.

It might be easier and quicker to take the skirting boards off and replace. They aren't expensive and you can stick them on with 'no nails'.

Then if they don't lie flush with the wall, you can fill in the gaps with decorators caulk or similar, there's another thread about that on this page.
