Pinting old chipboard

I have a huge 16'x8'x2' built-in wardrobe made in bare chipboard (not melamine coated) by a previous owner. It is very strong and solid but not pretty and I would like to paint it.
Should I use a liquid crack filler first or can I just prime and paint it?

i would give it a light sand then prime and paint. try to find a suitable primer - some are not suitable for chipboard due to the resins holding the fibres together.

Thanks Chris. Sounds a sensible approach. I will try a small hidden area first.
