do I need to sand wood inbetween undercoat and top coat

sanding will give a key to topcoat whilst enabling you to ensure that this final bit of preparation befor the finish is as perfect as possible. It's amazing how much tiny bits of grit and unnoticed drips come to light when you gloss!! So 20 mins with a bit of 1000grade and a damp cloth (water or white spirit) will give you a better chance of a top notch finish.
