Papering up to builders opening too hot?

Hi, I am new to this forum and any advice wold be appreciated!
I will be installing a wood burning stove into a builders opening in the chimney breast. I would really like to leave the breast free of a surround and leave the finished fireplace looking like the picture at the top of the woodburner project here ==>

I would like to paper the breast up to the opening, but this will bring the paper to about 9" of the stove, I'm not convinced of the safety of this!!
An L shape metal trim would be fitted around the opening to tidy the transition. (If I can find something nice!)
I can't find any references to this being done before and would appreciate any advice!
Many thanks.
