I would like to paint wooden stairs and prefer not to have a runner -
Can anyone recommend a non-slip paint or someway of making the treads non slip to the foot

Jennifer King,
If you really must do this buy some kiln-dried sand for block paving, paint the steps using oil based paint, leave for a while - the paint must still be tacky and throw the sand on the steps. Next day brush off the excess.

Try Protectakote Anti Slip paint. It comes in a small range of colours including white and cream which should suit your purpose.
Google "protectakote.co.uk/anti_slip_paint.htm"
