Painting a wooden veneer fire surround

I am looking to paint a wooden veneer fire surround and i need advice , can anybody tell me what paint is best suited for this job ? I realise that it will need primed and undercoated first but what about the top coat ? i am wanting a matt white finish and was wondering if there is a specialist paint to use that is hard wearing and will also look good . To avoid brush marks is a spray paint an option ? Thanks in advance for any help received .
