Help re-painting metal garage and front doors

Would anyone please be able to help my husband, he painted my daughter's metal garage and matching metal front doors about 4 years ago and now it looks terrible, peeling and flaking.

He was a builder, now retired, and he's very particular about preparing work such as this. He did all the usual preparations thoroughtly and used a recommended paint. He's now noticed that the undercoat originally used seems to be waterbased, could this be the problem?

I've printed off the information on this site about painting metal garages doors, but any advice would be gratefully appreciated, as to what products would be best or suggestions as to why this paint now looks so bad, as it will obviously need to be done again and he would like it to last as long as possible, looking it's best.

Thank you.

sonjaday,
Certainly sounds like there is some incompatibilty between the paint layers. Suggest using a pressure washer to see if you can get back to bare metal. A special metal primer will then be needed before applying subsequent coats.

i'd be inclined to use an "etch" primer on the bare metal first. a bit of a pain to apply but i think worth it in the long run.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.

I've passed them on to my husband, who thought that must be the way he had to go.

Sorry it's taken me so long to thank you, but I've been having trouble with the pc!!!! That's another story altogether!!!!! :?

Best wishes
