Painting new wooden table to give shabby/distressed look?

Hello,
We have purchased a relatively cheap woodern table that we would like to strip down and paint in a distressed / shabby style to look like a French Farmhouse style relatively expensive version that OH loves.
Links to both are below but we would really welcome any experience or advice anyone can offer on the steps we need to take to achieve a great moneysaving result on this?
From This:
Google: Tesco Whitton Table and Chairs Natural
To This:
Google: Homesdirect365 Country Farmhouse Antique French Round Table
Many thanks in advance for any help, we are complete novices at this but thought it worth a go...
