Peeling ceiling help in bathroom after mould treatment

by 00146608 » Wed Jun 05, 2013 8:35 am

Hello, I wonder if you can help - I have a shower stall and a small amount of mold appreared on the ceiling hence I read up on the internet for a treatment - mixed 50% bleach and 505 warm water and applied to the ceiling with a sponge. I then left to dry completley. Then painted the ceiling with zimmer paint (a Stain-blocking Primer) and now the ceiling keeps peeling.
So I then sanded the ceiling and painted with a standard Dulux Matt white paint and it still keeps peeling.
Any ideas? I think I need to neutralize the bleach?

Me again - I washed the ceiling with suggar soap and then painted again - it still keeps peeling - I used a warm air heater in the shower room aimed at drying out the washed ceiling before painting but still peeling? Help!

Hi, how far have you taken it back as you say you have washed it with sugar soap. Is it back to bare plaster or just to the sealing paint you put on. It could be that you are putting the emulsion on too thickly and that the ceiling needs a mist coat, ie watered down coat first so that it adheres to it then give it two further coats. Bit more info may help.

Hi well it is artexed in a swirly pattern, whist I sanded it with a sanding block i never went raight back to a smooth ceiling my aim was to get the loose bits of paint off and provide a key for the paint - so I painted after and then put a warm air blower to dry the paint and then added another coat but after 3-4 days it started peeling again.

Hi it sounds like you may need to strip the artex off your ceiling and start again, look at our project on removing artex to help you https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/artex.htm. It is best to let paint dry naturally raher than trying to force dry it, and as theshedman says it may need a mist coat first.
