What to use After Deglosser on Varnished Wood Ceiling

I have a varnished wooden ceiling and I want to paint over it. So I am going to use a deglosser to rough it up a bit rather than sanding.
What do you suggest I use after that before I put the paint on? DO I need a primer of some sort?
