What Type Paint for Painting Timber Boarded Ceiling?

by neal_dodd » Fri Mar 11, 2016 11:04 am

Hello

My ceiling has wooden panels on the ceiling, painted white.

I'm having a new kitchen put in and would like to paint this over the weekend so it's nice and new.

I'm not sure what type of paint is on the wood.

Can I just paint over it? If so, what type of paint should I use?

Many thanks!

The existing paint should be rubbed down so there are no loose or flaking bits (see our page on preparing timber for painting https://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/prepwood.htm ) then an oil based undercoat and top coat should be used. This can be matt, gloss or eggshell but it must be oil based. This means it will not allow any condensation to be soaked into the paint and can be cleaned easily as the steam that rises from cooking in the kitchen can be a little grubby
