Sealing Laminate Worktops After Spraying With Stone Effect Paint

We have a worktop in our bathroom which is looking old and has hard water stains which won't go away. We've been looking online for ideas and decided to spray paint the worktop with a stone effect spray (Rustoleum) but need some advice on sealing it. Some say epoxy resin and some suggest varnish. We've never used epoxy before but there are loads of tutorials out there. We don't want to use the pouring epoxy but would the coating epoxy be OK?
Also how much would we need to cover an area of approx 3sq ft (0.3sq m) - there is a 500g kit you can buy online but not sure it'd be enough and would we need to sand the painted layer first?
Any other advice gratefully received.
