How To Fix Hole In Plasterboard Wall in Flat

Hi.
I have a hole in my wall. I looked up how to fix it and tried to do what it said but it was obviously completely the wrong thing to do. It involved some kind of fibreglass mesh thing and then some Decoraters Flexible Filler on top. Anyway, I made a right pig's ear of it and it was a mess. I thought I could sand it down and it would look fine, but I have no idea how these things work. I've got rid of the fibreglass thing to reveal the hole again. It's a rented property so I don't have any spare plasterboard lying around. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thanks.
